Yoga mat, yoga pad, exercise mat – what's the difference
Short answer: none. ‘Yoga mat’ is the most common in everyday speech, ‘yoga pad’ is simply descriptive.
‘Exercise mat’ is used in a wider fitness context (not just yoga). In our catalogue, we use ‘yoga mat’ as the main term.
Who a UTOPY yoga mat suits, and when
- For home practice
- Morning sun salutations, evening stretching, short video workouts. A standard thickness of 4–6 mm strikes a balance between stability and comfort under your knees.
- For the studio
- Yoga classes, Pilates courses, mobility work. A lighter, thinner yoga mat (3–4 mm) is easy to carry, and the design helps you spot ‘yours’ in a pile of other people's.
- For travel
- A foldable yoga mat for your backpack, business trips, hotel rooms. The key: thickness under 4 mm, so it rolls up tightly.
- For hot yoga and intense stretching
- Here, add a yoga towel over the mat – it soaks up sweat and stops you slipping. Without a towel, any yoga mat will get slippery in hot yoga.
What matters in a yoga mat
- Surface
- It needs a fine texture so your foot or palm doesn't slip in Downward Dog. Dry hands vs sweaty hands is a difference you'll notice in your first class.
- Thickness
- Thinner (3–4 mm) = better stability in standing and balance poses. Thicker (6+ mm) = more knee comfort in kneeling poses and restorative yoga.
- Size
- Standard is roughly 173×61 cm. If you're taller than 180 cm, look for longer models.
- Design
- The look isn't an extra – it's motivation. A yoga mat with an UTOPY design actually helps get you up for your practice on a Monday morning, instead of just lying rolled up in the corner.
Care, so your yoga mat lasts for years
- After class, wipe with a damp cloth or yoga mat spray – harsh detergents damage the material
- Hot yoga: towel over the mat + hang both to dry after class
- Store flat or loosely rolled – a tightly tied mat gets permanent creases
- Hours of direct sunlight a day dry out the material and fade the colours
Tip from Terka on our socials: I use my UTOPY yoga mat at home for my own practice and for Instagram photos. It works for both – in the morning it gets me up for twenty minutes of practice, in the evening it's a styled backdrop for my coffee.
FAQs about this category
What yoga mat thickness should I choose to start with?
If you're new to yoga or Pilates and your knees don't bother you yet, go for 4–5 mm – a balance between stability and comfort. If you have sensitive knees or do restorative yoga, go for 6+ mm. If you travel and want a yoga mat for your backpack, 3–4 mm.
Does the UTOPY yoga mat work for Pilates and stretching too?
Yes. A yoga mat, yoga pad and exercise mat are the same thing in practice – they work for yoga, Pilates, stretching, mobility work, lighter home HIIT and restorative exercise. For heavy strength training with weights, we'd rather recommend a thick solid rubber mat.
How often should I wash my yoga mat?
Wipe it with spray or a damp cloth after every class. A proper wash (by hand in lukewarm water with a mild detergent) is enough once every 2–4 weeks with regular practice, more often with hot yoga. A washing machine will usually damage a yoga mat.
A yoga mat for hot yoga – will a regular one do?
For hot yoga, a yoga mat on its own isn't enough, however good it is. Add a yoga towel over the mat – it soaks up sweat and stops you slipping. Without a towel, your hands and feet will start sliding within the first fifteen minutes.
Will a yoga mat fit in a backpack?
Rolled up, a standard yoga mat measures roughly 60 × 15 cm in diameter – it will usually fit upright in a smaller backpack, sticking out slightly at the top. For a highly packable travel option, look for a 3 mm thickness, which rolls up more tightly.
What goes with a yoga mat
A yoga mat works on its own, but your practice is about the complete kit. We recommend pairing it with a yoga towel (hot yoga, sweating), resistance bands (mobility, activation), and a drawstring bag for the trip to the studio. For your outfit, 3/4 leggings or high waisted leggings and a sports bra.
